Why Choose Anubias for Your Aquarium?
Anubias is one of the easiest live aquarium plants to maintain. It grows slowly, tolerates shaded areas and doesn't need specialised CO2 equipment.
Its firm, green leaves create an attractive contrast against aquarium wood, rock and delicate stem plants.
Small Anubias are particularly useful for decorating driftwood and adding detail around aquarium hardscape. Larger-growing varieties may need more room as they mature.

How to Plant Anubias Correctly
Important: Never bury the thick rhizome beneath aquarium substrate. The rhizome is the horizontal stem from which the leaves and roots grow. Burying it can cause the plant to rot.
For best results:
- Rinse the plant gently before placing it in your aquarium.
- Attach the rhizome to aquarium-safe driftwood or rock.
- Use thread or a small amount of aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate gel glue to secure it.
- Keep the rhizome exposed to the aquarium water.
- Allow the roots to grow naturally around the hardscape.
You can also let the roots grow into gravel or aquarium soil, provided the rhizome remains above the substrate.

Lighting and Fertiliser Requirements
Anubias performs well under low to moderate aquarium lighting. Very strong lighting can encourage algae to grow on its slow-growing leaves.
Injected CO2 is not essential. A balanced liquid aquarium fertiliser can help maintain healthy growth where nutrients are limited.
Keep water conditions stable and remove old or heavily damaged leaves when needed.
Is Anubias Suitable for Fish and Shrimp Tanks?
Yes. Anubias works well in many freshwater community aquariums.
Its leaves provide shelter for small fish and resting places for Bettas. Shrimp may also graze on biofilm that develops across the leaves and roots.
The sturdy foliage is less easily damaged than many delicate stem plants. However, no aquarium plant is completely resistant to determined plant-eating fish.
