Freshwater Loaches for Sale in Australia
Shop freshwater Loaches for sale in Australia at Aquaholics. Our changing range may include Kuhli Loaches, Clown Loaches, Dwarf Chain Loaches and other bottom-dwelling species.
Loaches vary enormously in adult size and behaviour. Choose the exact species carefully and plan for its long-term aquarium size, social needs, substrate and tank mates.
Loach Species Have Very Different Requirements
Kuhli Loaches, Dwarf Chain Loaches and Clown Loaches should not be treated as interchangeable. Kuhli Loaches are slender, secretive bottom dwellers. Dwarf Chain Loaches stay much smaller but remain active and social. Clown Loaches grow very large and require a spacious long-term aquarium and a suitable group.
Check adult size and social behaviour before choosing. Browse our aquariums and fish tanks when planning for larger species.
Substrate, Cover and Aquarium Layout
Many Loaches spend significant time near the bottom and appreciate smooth substrate, caves, wood and shaded hiding areas. Avoid sharp gravel or decorations. Ensure all structures are stable and cannot trap a fish.
Create shelter with suitable aquascaping materials and live plants, while maintaining enough open area for the chosen species.
Filtration and Water Quality
Loaches benefit from clean, well-oxygenated water and dependable filtration. Larger, active species can place a substantial load on the aquarium. Choose aquarium filtration suited to the final fish size and stocking level, not just the fish's sale size.
Feeding Loaches
Do not expect Loaches to survive only on scraps. Offer species-appropriate sinking food and supplement it with suitable frozen, live or plant-based foods according to the species. Confirm that food reaches shy bottom dwellers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Loaches need to be kept in groups?
Many popular Loaches are social and show more natural behaviour in suitable groups. The correct group size and aquarium dimensions depend on the species.
How large do Clown Loaches grow?
Clown Loaches can exceed 30 centimetres and are social fish, so they need a very large long-term aquarium. Small shop size should never be treated as adult size.
Will Loaches eat aquarium snails?
Some Loach species eat snails, but this varies and should not be the sole reason for purchasing them. Their adult size, social requirements and long-term care must come first.
What substrate is best for Loaches?
Many bottom-dwelling Loaches benefit from smooth sand or fine rounded substrate that will not damage their barbels or bodies. Species requirements should still be checked.
