Choose Supplements for the Aquarium

Begin with the plants, substrate, livestock and existing nutrient sources. Fish food, livestock waste, tap water and nutrient-rich aquasoil can already contribute nutrients. A lightly stocked aquascape and a heavily stocked community tank may therefore need different supplementation.

Complete fertilisers, iron supplements, potassium products, trace-element blends and carbon-related plant products have different purposes. Do not combine products simply because they are marketed for plants. Check for overlapping ingredients and follow each manufacturer's directions.

Dose Carefully and Observe Plant Growth

Measure doses accurately for the aquarium's actual water volume, allowing for substrate and hardscape displacement. Start with label directions and change only after observing plant growth, algae, water testing and the response of the aquarium.

More fertiliser is not automatically better. Excess or imbalance can waste product and complicate aquarium management. Stable routines and gradual adjustments make it easier to identify what is helping.

Light, CO2 and Substrate Still Matter

Supplements cannot compensate for unsuitable lighting, unstable CO2 delivery, damaged roots or a plant that is not suited to the aquarium. Diagnose the whole setup before increasing a single nutrient.

Root-feeding plants may benefit from nutrient-rich substrate or root-zone fertilisation, while other plants take much of their nutrition from the water column. Check the needs of the exact species rather than using one method for every plant.
