Is This Fish Right for Your Aquarium?

Panda Platies are an excellent choice for peaceful freshwater community aquariums. They are colourful without being aggressive, stay relatively small and are generally straightforward to feed and care for.

They are particularly well suited to aquariums containing other peaceful livebearers and community fish that are comfortable in neutral to alkaline, moderately hard water. Suitable tank mates can include Guppies, peaceful Rainbowfish, Corydoras and other similarly sized community species where water requirements are compatible.

Platies are not true schooling fish, but they do benefit from having other Platies around them. If keeping males and females together, be aware that they can breed readily and females may already be carrying developing young when purchased.

Aquarium Setup and Feeding

A mature aquarium of around 60 litres or larger is a good starting point for a small group of Panda Platies. Provide open swimming areas along with plants and other cover so the fish can explore while still having places to retreat.

Platies are especially attractive in planted aquariums, and live aquarium plants can also provide additional cover for adults and any fry that may appear.

Water quality should be stable, with effective aquarium filtration and regular partial water changes. Platies generally prefer moderately hard to hard, neutral-to-alkaline water and are not an ideal choice for very soft, acidic aquariums.

Panda Platies are omnivorous and readily accept most quality aquarium foods. A varied diet based around good-quality flakes or small pellets, together with foods containing vegetable matter and occasional frozen or live foods, will help keep them in good condition.
