Albino Bristlenose Catfish – Ancistrus sp. “Albino” 5cm

The Albino Bristlenose Catfish – Ancistrus sp. “Albino” is a popular freshwater pleco recognised for its pale cream to golden colour, reddish eyes and distinctive facial bristles that become particularly prominent on mature males.

Bristlenose Catfish remain considerably smaller than many of the large plecos sold in the aquarium trade, making them a practical choice for many established freshwater community aquariums.

Fish supplied are approximately 5cm unless otherwise stated.

About Albino Bristlenose Catfish

Albino Bristlenose are a selectively bred colour form of the common aquarium Bristlenose Catfish.

The exact ancestry of commercially bred common Bristlenose is uncertain, so assigning every aquarium strain to a single wild species such as Ancistrus cirrhosus can be misleading.

For this reason, Ancistrus sp. “Albino” is an appropriate name for the common albino form sold in the aquarium trade.

Albino Bristlenose typically develop a pale cream, yellow or golden appearance with red to pinkish eyes. Their unusual colour makes them particularly noticeable against dark substrate, driftwood and planted aquarium backgrounds.

How Big Do Albino Bristlenose Grow?

Common aquarium Bristlenose generally reach around 12–13cm standard length when mature.

This makes them much more manageable than large plecos such as Sailfin Plecos, which can eventually reach several times this size.

A 5cm Albino Bristlenose is still juvenile, so aquarium space should be planned around its adult size.

Aquarium Setup

Albino Bristlenose are adaptable fish, but they benefit from an established aquarium with plenty of cover and good oxygenation.

A suitable aquarium can include:

  • Caves or sheltered areas
  • Driftwood
  • Rocks
  • Live plants
  • Smooth gravel or sand substrate
  • Good biological filtration
  • Well-oxygenated water

Bristlenose spend much of their time resting beneath wood, inside caves or grazing aquarium surfaces.

If keeping more than one adult, provide several separate shelters because individuals can become territorial around preferred caves.

Water Conditions

Commercially bred Bristlenose Catfish are relatively adaptable when maintained in stable, clean freshwater conditions.

  • Temperature: Approximately 21–26°C
  • pH: Approximately 5.5–7.5
  • Hardness: Approximately 1–15 dGH

Good oxygenation, established biological filtration and regular aquarium maintenance are important.

Avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry.

Do Albino Bristlenose Eat Algae?

Yes. Bristlenose commonly graze on algae and biofilm growing across aquarium glass, wood, rocks and other surfaces.

However, they should not be expected to survive on aquarium algae alone.

An aquarium may not produce enough natural food to meet their nutritional needs, particularly when several algae-grazing fish are present.

Bristlenose should therefore receive a balanced supplementary diet.

Feeding Albino Bristlenose Catfish

Common Bristlenose are best considered omnivorous grazers rather than strict herbivores.

A varied diet can include:

  • Quality algae wafers
  • Vegetable-based sinking foods
  • Spirulina foods
  • Zucchini or courgette
  • Other suitable vegetables
  • Quality sinking catfish pellets
  • Occasional frozen foods such as Daphnia or bloodworm
  • Occasional shrimp or prawn-based foods

Remove uneaten fresh vegetables before they begin to deteriorate and affect aquarium water quality.

Do Bristlenose Need Driftwood?

Driftwood is useful in a Bristlenose aquarium because it provides shelter, grazing surfaces and natural structure.

However, it is better viewed as part of a well-designed aquarium environment rather than as a substitute for a balanced diet.

Provide appropriate food regardless of how much natural wood, algae or biofilm is available in the aquarium.

Temperament and Tank Mates

Albino Bristlenose Catfish are generally peaceful toward other aquarium fish and are well suited to many freshwater community aquariums.

Suitable tank mates can include:

  • Tetras
  • Rasboras
  • Guppies and other livebearers
  • Gouramis
  • Many peaceful cichlids
  • Corydoras
  • Other compatible freshwater species

Adult Bristlenose can become territorial toward other Bristlenose and similarly shaped plecos, especially when competing for caves.

When keeping multiple adults, provide additional floor space and several separate shelters.

Male vs Female Bristlenose

Sexual differences become much clearer as Bristlenose mature.

Adult males develop prominent tentacle-like bristles across the snout and upper head.

Females generally have fewer and much shorter bristles, often concentrated around the edge of the snout.

Juveniles around 5cm may be difficult to sex reliably because these characteristics may not yet be fully developed.

Breeding Albino Bristlenose

Bristlenose are cave-spawning catfish and are commonly bred in aquariums.

A mature pair will usually select a confined cave or similar shelter for spawning.

After the eggs are laid, the male guards the eggs and developing young inside the cave.

Providing several appropriately sized caves can be useful when maintaining breeding fish or multiple adults.

Are Albino Bristlenose Good for Community Aquariums?

Yes. Their manageable adult size, generally peaceful behaviour and ability to live across a relatively broad range of freshwater conditions make Albino Bristlenose popular community aquarium catfish.

They still need proper feeding, clean water and suitable hiding places and should never be purchased purely as an aquarium cleaning tool.

Why Choose an Albino Bristlenose Catfish?

Albino Bristlenose combine the interesting behaviour of a pleco with a much more manageable adult size than many commonly sold suckermouth catfish.

Their pale colour, unusual facial bristles and constant grazing behaviour make them an attractive addition to many established freshwater aquariums.

How big do Albino Bristlenose Catfish grow?

Common aquarium Bristlenose generally reach around 12–13cm standard length when mature.

What temperature do Albino Bristlenose need?

A temperature of approximately 21–26°C is suitable for common commercially bred Bristlenose.

What pH do Albino Bristlenose prefer?

A pH of approximately 5.5–7.5 is suitable when water conditions remain stable.

Do Albino Bristlenose eat algae?

Yes. They graze algae and biofilm from aquarium surfaces, but they still require a balanced supplementary diet and should not be expected to survive only on naturally occurring algae.

What should I feed an Albino Bristlenose?

Provide a varied diet including algae wafers, vegetable-based sinking foods, suitable fresh vegetables and quality sinking catfish foods, with occasional protein-rich foods.

Are Albino Bristlenose peaceful?

They are generally peaceful toward other fish but can become territorial toward other Bristlenose or similar plecos, particularly around caves.

How can I tell a male from a female Albino Bristlenose?

Mature males develop prominent bristles across the snout and head, while females usually develop fewer and shorter bristles. Juvenile fish may be difficult to sex accurately.

Do Albino Bristlenose need driftwood?

Driftwood provides useful shelter and grazing surfaces and is a good addition to a Bristlenose aquarium, but it does not replace the need for a balanced diet.

Can Albino Bristlenose live in planted aquariums?

Yes. They can be kept successfully in planted aquariums provided the aquarium also includes suitable shelters, good filtration and appropriate food.

How do Albino Bristlenose breed?

They are cave spawners. The female lays eggs inside a suitable cave and the male guards and cares for the eggs and young during their early development.
