Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel 4.5kg – Natural River Gravel

Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel 4.5kg is a naturally rounded, dark grey river gravel that creates a clean, natural-looking base for freshwater aquariums and aquascapes.

Made from 100% natural river gravel, Shadow features smooth, rounded stones with subtle variations in grey and earthy tones. The darker substrate provides excellent contrast against green aquarium plants, driftwood, rocks and brightly coloured fish without relying on artificial colouring.

Why Choose Shadow Gravel for Your Aquarium?

The dark grey colour of Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel creates a natural riverbed appearance while providing strong contrast against fish, rocks, driftwood and live aquarium plants.

Unlike brightly coloured artificial gravel, Shadow is naturally coloured. Individual stones vary slightly in shade and appearance, helping create a less uniform and more natural-looking aquarium floor.

The stones are naturally rounded rather than sharply crushed, making Shadow a practical substrate for many freshwater community aquariums.

Is Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel pH Neutral?

Yes. Shadow Gravel is sold as a pH-neutral aquarium gravel and is considered an inert substrate. It is therefore a good option when you want decorative gravel without deliberately increasing hardness or buffering the aquarium toward a higher pH.

If you specifically need an active planted substrate that influences water chemistry, compare the options in our planted aquarium substrate and aquasoil range.

Is Shadow Gravel Suitable for Planted Aquariums?

Yes. Aquarium plants can be grown in Shadow Gravel, and its 3–6mm grain size provides space for roots to establish between the stones.

However, Shadow is an inert gravel rather than a nutrient-rich aquasoil. Root-feeding plants may therefore benefit from root fertilisers or another suitable source of nutrients rather than relying on the gravel itself for plant nutrition.

How to Use Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel

  1. Place the required amount of gravel into a clean bucket.
  2. Rinse with clean water before use to remove any fine material created during handling and transport.
  3. Add the gravel evenly across the bottom of the empty aquarium.
  4. Create a level base or slope the gravel toward the rear for additional aquascaping depth.
  5. Add rocks, driftwood and plants as required.
  6. Fill the aquarium slowly to minimise disturbance to the substrate.

Although Shadow Gravel is triple washed before packaging, a final rinse before placing it in the aquarium is still recommended.

How Much Aquarium Gravel Do I Need?

The amount of gravel required depends on the aquarium's floor area and the substrate depth you want rather than simply the aquarium's total litre capacity.

For a decorative aquarium floor, a shallower layer may be sufficient. Planted aquariums generally benefit from a deeper substrate bed to provide additional room for plant roots.

Larger tanks, heavily planted layouts and aquascapes with raised rear sections may require multiple 4.5kg bags.

Easy Aquarium Maintenance

Unlike active aquasoils, natural aquarium gravel can be cleaned using a suitable aquarium gravel cleaner during routine water changes.

Move the gravel cleaner through accessible areas of the substrate to remove trapped waste while avoiding unnecessary disturbance around established plant roots.

Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel FAQs

Do I need to rinse Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel?

Yes. Although Shadow Gravel is triple washed and kiln dried before packaging, rinse it with clean water before use to remove any remaining fine material from handling and transport.

Will Shadow Gravel change my aquarium pH?

Shadow Gravel is sold as a pH-neutral, inert substrate and is not intended to raise or lower aquarium pH.

Is Shadow Gravel suitable for bottom-dwelling fish?

Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel consists of naturally rounded river stones rather than sharp crushed gravel. Its 3–6mm grain size can suit many freshwater community fish and bottom dwellers, although species with specialised substrate preferences should be considered individually.

Can I grow aquarium plants in Shadow Gravel?

Yes. Aquarium plants can root in Shadow Gravel, but the gravel itself is inert and should not be treated as a complete source of plant nutrients. Root tabs or other appropriate plant fertilisers may be useful for heavy root feeders.

What size is Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel?

Aqua Natural Shadow Gravel has a grain size of approximately 3–6mm, creating a natural-looking substrate suitable for many freshwater aquarium setups.

Is Shadow Gravel natural or artificially coloured?

Shadow Gravel is natural river gravel and contains no artificial colour. Natural variation between individual stones and bags should be expected.

Can Shadow Gravel be gravel vacuumed?

Yes. Unlike delicate active aquasoils, natural aquarium gravel can be cleaned with a suitable gravel vacuum during routine water changes.
