Kribensis Cichlid – Pelvicachromis pulcher 5–7cm

The Kribensis Cichlid (Pelvicachromis pulcher) is a colourful West African dwarf cichlid known for its bold personality, attractive markings and fascinating breeding behaviour.

Kribensis are relatively hardy and can suit fishkeepers looking for their first dwarf cichlid. They can live in a carefully planned community aquarium, although they become territorial when forming pairs or protecting eggs and fry.

The fish offered on this page are approximately 5–7cm and are supplied unsexed.

Kribensis Aquarium Setup

Provide plenty of structure and hiding places using aquarium caves, driftwood, rocks and plants. Each fish should be able to retreat from view when needed.

A sand or fine gravel substrate is recommended because Kribensis may dig around caves when preparing to breed. Keep the aquarium well filtered, but avoid excessive water movement. Stable water quality is more important than trying to reach an exact pH.

Aquarium caves and suitable hiding places are available in our aquarium ornaments range. You can also explore our aquarium gravel and substrate collection.

Temperament and Tank Mates

Kribensis can live with peaceful, similarly sized tropical fish when the aquarium provides enough space and cover. Suitable companions may include selected tetras, rasboras, danios, barbs, gouramis and small peaceful catfish.

Avoid keeping them with very aggressive cichlids or fish likely to dominate the lower areas of the aquarium. A breeding pair may strongly defend its cave and surrounding territory, so additional space is important in a community tank.

Feeding Kribensis Cichlids

Feed a varied diet based around a quality small cichlid pellet or granule. Supplement this with suitable frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms.

Offer small portions once or twice daily and avoid allowing uneaten food to collect around the substrate. Browse our range of cichlid fish food for suitable options.

Breeding Behaviour

Kribensis are cave spawners and may form strong breeding pairs. The female usually develops a rounded purple or red belly when ready to breed, while mature males are generally larger with longer, more pointed fins.

Both parents may guard their eggs and fry. During this period, they can become considerably more territorial toward other fish, particularly bottom-dwelling species.

What You Will Receive

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Kribensis suitable for a community aquarium?

Yes. Kribensis can live in a carefully selected community aquarium, but they may become territorial when breeding. Provide caves, visual barriers and enough room for other fish to avoid their territory.

How large do Kribensis Cichlids grow?

Adult males can reach approximately 10cm. Females generally remain smaller and develop a fuller, more colourful belly when mature.

Can I keep a single Kribensis?

Yes. A single Kribensis can be kept successfully. Compatible pairs may also be kept, but simply placing an unrelated male and female together does not guarantee that they will form a successful pair.

What size aquarium does a Kribensis need?

An aquarium of approximately 70 litres can suit a compatible pair. A larger aquarium is recommended when keeping them with other fish or when accommodating more than one territory.

Are these Kribensis male or female?

Fish supplied at this size are sold unsexed. Sex cannot be selected or guaranteed unless specifically stated on the product listing.
