Aqua Natural Iwagumi Nile 3.5kg – 3–4mm Aquascaping Substrate

Aqua Natural Iwagumi Nile 3.5kg is a 3–4mm decorative aquarium substrate designed to create clean, natural-looking aquascapes. Its medium gravel size makes it particularly suited to Iwagumi layouts, planted aquariums, biotope-style displays and other designs where the substrate forms an important part of the overall look.

The natural tones work well alongside aquascaping rock, driftwood and aquarium plants without overpowering the hardscape. Nile is also suitable for terrariums, bonsai displays and traditional Japanese-inspired landscape designs.

Designed for Iwagumi Aquascaping

Iwagumi aquascaping uses a restrained combination of carefully positioned rocks, open substrate and plants to create a balanced natural landscape.

Aqua Natural Nile provides a medium 3–4mm texture that can help define open foreground areas, slopes and pathways while complementing feature stones rather than competing with them visually.

It can also be used outside traditional Iwagumi layouts whenever you want a natural-looking aquarium gravel for a planted or biotope-style aquarium.

Is Iwagumi Nile Suitable for Planted Aquariums?

Yes. Nile can be used as the visible substrate in planted aquariums and aquascapes, and its 3–4mm particle size allows plant roots to grow between the grains.

However, it is primarily sold as an aquascaping substrate rather than as a nutrient-rich active aquasoil. Root-feeding aquarium plants may therefore benefit from root fertilisers or another suitable nutrient source depending on the plants you keep.

For nutrient-focused active substrates, compare the options in our planted aquarium substrate and aquasoil category.

How to Use Iwagumi Nile Substrate

  1. Lightly rinse the substrate before use to remove loose dust created during transport and handling.
  2. Add the substrate to the empty aquarium.
  3. Create a level bed or build the substrate higher toward the rear to create depth and perspective.
  4. Position aquascaping rocks, driftwood and other hardscape before planting.
  5. Add live aquarium plants where required.
  6. Fill the aquarium slowly so the layout and substrate are not disturbed.

Pouring water onto a plate, plastic sheet or other flat surface while filling can help prevent the substrate from being displaced.

How Much Iwagumi Nile Do I Need?

The amount of substrate you need depends on the aquarium's floor dimensions and the depth of the layout rather than simply the aquarium's litre capacity.

Aquascapes with steep slopes or raised rear sections use considerably more substrate than a simple level decorative layer. Multiple 3.5kg bags may therefore be required for larger aquariums or more heavily sculpted layouts.

If you're combining Nile with other substrate colours or textures, keep the different materials in defined areas where possible so the aquascape remains easier to maintain.

More Than Just an Aquarium Substrate

Aqua Natural's Iwagumi range is also designed for decorative applications outside the aquarium. Nile can be incorporated into terrariums, bonsai displays and Japanese-inspired rock gardens where a fine-to-medium natural-looking gravel is required.

Aqua Natural Iwagumi Nile FAQs

What size is Aqua Natural Iwagumi Nile?

Iwagumi Nile has an approximate grain size of 3–4mm, making it a medium aquarium gravel rather than a fine sand.

What is Iwagumi aquarium substrate?

Iwagumi substrate is chosen to complement the simple rock-focused layouts associated with Japanese Iwagumi aquascaping. It helps create open areas, slopes and visual contrast around the main hardscape.

Can I use Iwagumi Nile in a planted aquarium?

Yes. Nile can be used in planted freshwater aquariums. Root-feeding plants may require additional fertilisation because this product should not be treated as a complete nutrient-rich aquasoil.

Do I need to rinse Iwagumi Nile before use?

A light rinse before use is recommended to remove loose dust or fine particles created during handling and transport. Avoid unnecessarily aggressive washing.

Can I use Iwagumi Nile for a biotope aquarium?

Yes. Aqua Natural specifically recommends its Iwagumi substrates for biotope-style aquariums as well as traditional Iwagumi and artistic aquascapes.

Can Iwagumi Nile be used with aquascaping rocks?

Yes. The product is specifically designed to create a natural foundation around aquascaping rocks and works particularly well in minimalist Iwagumi-style layouts.

Can I use Iwagumi Nile in a terrarium or bonsai display?

Yes. Aqua Natural also recommends the Iwagumi range for terrariums, bonsai and traditional Japanese-inspired rock gardens.
