Red Empress Cichlid – 4–5cm

The Red Empress Cichlid (Protomelas taeniolatus) is one of the most impressive Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids, best known for the spectacular colour mature males can develop.

At 4–5cm, these are still juvenile fish and should not be expected to show their full adult colouration yet. Young Red Empress Cichlids are usually much more subdued, with silver-grey, brown or lightly barred tones. As males mature and become dominant, they can develop vivid red and orange across the body, contrasting with brilliant blue around the head, face and fins.

This dramatic change from relatively plain juvenile to colourful adult is a big part of their appeal.

Fish Profile

In the wild, Protomelas taeniolatus is associated with shallow rocky areas of Lake Malawi, where it feeds predominantly on algae and small organisms found around rock surfaces.

Unlike many highly territorial mbuna, the Red Empress tends to spend more time swimming through open areas around rock formations. This makes it an excellent feature fish for larger Malawi aquariums where both rockwork and open swimming space are provided.

They are generally considered one of the more manageable Malawi haps in terms of aggression, although mature males can become territorial and considerably more assertive when breeding.

Colour & Development

Juveniles and females are generally much less colourful than dominant adult males.

As males mature, their colour can become spectacular, with red, orange and blue tones intensifying as the fish establishes dominance and breeding condition. Colouration can vary between locality strains and individual fish, so not every fish will develop exactly the same appearance.

At 4–5cm, sex can also be difficult to determine reliably, so these fish should generally be purchased as juveniles rather than guaranteed males or females unless specifically stated otherwise.

Aquarium Setup

Red Empress Cichlids grow into large, active fish and should be given plenty of room as they mature.

A suitable aquarium should provide:

• plenty of open swimming space

• sturdy rock formations

• caves and visual barriers

• a sand or fine-gravel substrate

• strong biological filtration

• good water circulation and oxygenation

A layout with rockwork concentrated toward the back and sides of the aquarium works particularly well, leaving a large open swimming area through the centre.

Stable water quality is more important than constantly chasing exact numbers. Malawi cichlids generally thrive in hard, alkaline water with good buffering capacity.

Temperament & Tank Mates

For a Lake Malawi cichlid, the Red Empress is relatively peaceful, but it should still be considered a semi-aggressive species.

Mature males can become territorial, particularly toward other males or similarly coloured fish. In larger aquariums, they are commonly kept with compatible Malawi haps and peacock cichlids of similar size and temperament.

Suitable companions may include:

• other peaceful to moderately assertive Malawi haps

• Copadichromis

• Placidochromis

• appropriately sized Protomelas species

Avoid housing them with very small, timid or delicate fish.

Care should also be taken when keeping multiple males, as dominant males may continually harass weaker individuals. A single male with several females is often the most stable long-term arrangement for breeding groups.

Feeding

Red Empress Cichlids are omnivorous but naturally consume a significant amount of algae and plant-based material.

A good captive diet should include:

• quality African cichlid pellets

• spirulina-based flakes or pellets

• vegetable-rich foods

• occasional frozen foods such as brine shrimp or mysis

Avoid relying heavily on rich, high-protein foods.

They can be enthusiastic feeders, so smaller controlled meals are preferable to overfeeding. A varied diet with a strong vegetable component will help maintain good body condition and colour.

Growth & Adult Size

Although the fish offered here are approximately 4–5cm, Red Empress Cichlids can grow to around 18–20cm as adults.

Because of their eventual size and active swimming behaviour, they should not be viewed as a small aquarium species. A larger aquarium will provide much better long-term results, particularly if keeping a group or mixing them with other Malawi cichlids.

Breeding

The Red Empress is a maternal mouthbrooder.

When breeding, the male establishes a territory and displays intensely to attract females. After spawning, the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them while they develop.

Brooding typically lasts around three to four weeks before the female releases free-swimming fry. During this period she may eat very little or not at all.

Mature breeding males usually display their strongest colour during courtship and territorial displays.
