Zeolite types of media do an amazing job of getting rid of ammonia in your aquarium by absorbing ammonia and reducing nitrates and nitrates in your tank. Zeolite is recommended in case of ammonia spikes or potential ammonia spikes.

Zeolite is an extremely absorbent and porous mineral, mainly comprising silica and aluminium which enables mainly to capture multiple undesirable contents in the water, and absorbs undesirable elements from the water.

Zeolite can be used for about a month after which it needs to be recharged.  Recharging is done by emerging it in a salt solution.

Given that track record, why not use zeolite in your filter all the time? Although opinions vary, most agree that zeolite is great for emergency situations, but is generally not ideal for on-going long-term use.
