Why Test for Magnesium in the Aquarium?
Magnesium is one of the most abundant elements in seawater. It plays an important role in preventing the precipitation of calcium and carbonates and therefore in keeping both of these in high enough concentrations to maximize growth of corals and other calcifying organisms. Magnesium should be maintained in a marine aquarium at levels of between 12000-1400ppm. At levels below this, growth of calcifying organisms may be reduced and calcium and carbonate levels will drop.
