Aqua Natural Premium Cichlid Aragonite Sand 4.5kg is a natural calcium carbonate aquarium substrate designed for African cichlid, marine and other aquariums where harder, more alkaline water is desirable.

Made from naturally occurring oolitic aragonite from the Bahamas, this fine aquarium sand is up to approximately 98% calcium carbonate. Aragonite provides carbonate minerals that can help support alkalinity, hardness and a more stable higher pH.

The 4.5kg bag is a convenient option for smaller substrate areas, topping up an existing aragonite bed or combining multiple bags to achieve the required depth in a larger African cichlid aquarium.

Why Use Aragonite for African Cichlids?

Many African Rift Lake cichlids naturally live in mineral-rich, alkaline water. Maintaining suitable hardness and alkalinity is therefore an important part of creating the right aquarium environment.

Unlike inert aquarium sand, aragonite is primarily calcium carbonate. It can gradually contribute carbonate minerals to the water and provide buffering capacity that helps resist downward changes in pH.

This makes it particularly useful for many African Cichlid aquariums where your source water would otherwise require additional mineral or buffering support.

Aragonite does not guarantee one exact aquarium pH. The final water chemistry will depend on your source water, carbonate hardness, aquarium setup, filtration, stocking and maintenance routine.

Fine Oolitic Aragonite Sand

Aqua Natural Cichlid Aragonite consists of fine oolitic grains. These naturally rounded particles create a smooth sand bed rather than the sharp edges associated with some crushed mineral substrates.

The approximate 0.5–1.5mm grain size gives the aquarium a clean, natural appearance and is particularly well suited to rock-based African cichlid displays.

The pale substrate also creates strong contrast against colourful Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids and darker aquarium rockwork.

How Much Aragonite Do I Need?

The amount of substrate required depends mainly on the aquarium's length, width and desired substrate depth.

A single 4.5kg bag can be useful for smaller substrate areas, topping up an established sand bed or creating feature areas within an aquarium.

Larger cichlid aquariums will normally require multiple 4.5kg bags or the larger 9kg version to achieve an even substrate bed.

How to Prepare Aqua Natural Aragonite

Although the substrate is processed before packing, rinse it thoroughly with clean water before adding it to your aquarium.

1. Place a manageable amount of aragonite into a clean bucket.
2. Rinse using clean water only.
3. Do not use soap, detergent or household cleaning products.
4. Continue rinsing until the overflow changes from very milky to lightly cloudy.
5. Add the rinsed substrate to the aquarium.

Some temporary cloudiness can still occur with fine mineral substrates. This normally settles or is removed by filtration after the aquarium is filled.

Setting Up a New Aquarium

For a new aquarium, place the rinsed aragonite into the empty tank before filling.

Add water carefully to minimise disturbance of the sand, then start the filtration system and allow suspended particles to settle.

Before adding fish, make sure the aquarium is properly cycled and that temperature, pH, ammonia and nitrite are suitable and stable.

Adding Aragonite to an Established Aquarium

Take extra care when adding aragonite to an aquarium that already contains livestock.

Because aragonite can influence alkalinity, hardness and pH, adding a large quantity to softer water may alter the aquarium chemistry.

Rinse the substrate thoroughly and consider introducing it gradually where the existing water is considerably softer or more acidic.

Test the aquarium before and after making substantial substrate changes.

Aragonite vs Inert Aquarium Sand

The major difference is that aragonite is chemically active, while substrates such as quartz and silica sand are generally chosen because they have much less influence on aquarium water chemistry.

Choose aragonite where harder, more alkaline conditions are desirable.
