Aqua Natural Premium Cichlid Aragonite Sand 9kg

Aqua Natural Premium Cichlid Aragonite Sand 9kg is a natural calcium carbonate aquarium substrate designed for African cichlid, marine and other aquariums where harder, more alkaline water is desirable.

Made from naturally occurring oolitic aragonite from the Bahamas, this fine sand is approximately 98% calcium carbonate. As the aragonite slowly interacts with the aquarium water, it provides carbonate minerals that can help support alkalinity, hardness and a more stable higher pH.

This makes it particularly useful for African Rift Lake cichlid aquariums, where fish such as Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids naturally prefer hard, alkaline water.

Why Use Aragonite for African Cichlids?

Many African Rift Lake cichlids naturally come from water with a relatively high mineral content, high alkalinity and alkaline pH.

Unlike inert aquarium sand, aragonite is made primarily from calcium carbonate. This allows it to contribute carbonate minerals to the aquarium and helps provide buffering capacity against downward changes in pH.

It is therefore particularly useful for aquariums containing African Cichlids where your source water would otherwise require additional mineral or buffering support.

Aragonite should not be treated as a guarantee of one exact pH value. The final water chemistry will depend on your source water, aquarium setup, filtration, stocking and maintenance routine.

Fine Oolitic Aragonite Sand

Aqua Natural Cichlid Aragonite is made from oolitic aragonite. Oolitic grains are naturally rounded and smooth rather than sharp and angular.

The fine grain structure creates a natural-looking pale substrate and provides a large amount of surface area throughout the aquarium.

This surface can be colonised by beneficial microorganisms, adding additional biological surface area alongside your aquarium's main filtration system.

Helps Support Hard, Alkaline Water

Calcium carbonate dissolves more readily as aquarium water becomes acidic, helping resist downward movement in pH and supporting carbonate hardness.

The manufacturer describes this substrate as helping maintain water around the alkaline conditions required by marine and African cichlid aquariums.

However, every aquarium is different. Always test your water rather than assuming the substrate alone will create a specific pH.

For African cichlids, the goal should be stable, appropriate water chemistry rather than continually adjusting the aquarium to chase one exact number.

Ideal for African Cichlid Aquariums

The light natural colour and fine texture make this aragonite particularly well suited to Malawi, Tanganyika and other African cichlid displays.

It works well with:

  • rock-based African cichlid aquascapes
  • Mbuna aquariums
  • Peacock and Hap cichlid aquariums
  • Lake Tanganyika setups
  • other freshwater aquariums requiring hard, alkaline water
  • marine and reef aquariums

Always research the individual species you keep, as preferred pH and hardness vary between different African lakes and fish species.

How Much Aragonite Do I Need?

The amount required depends on the aquarium footprint and the depth of substrate you want to create.

A shallow layer may be sufficient for a simple cichlid display, while deeper areas can be used where you want more substantial sand beds or sculpted aquascaping.

For larger aquariums, more than one 9kg bag may be required to achieve even coverage across the aquarium base.

How to Prepare Aqua Natural Aragonite

Rinse the substrate thoroughly before adding it to the aquarium.

  1. Place a manageable amount of aragonite into a clean bucket.
  2. Rinse using clean water only.
  3. Do not use soap, detergent or household cleaning products.
  4. Continue rinsing until the overflow changes from very milky to lightly cloudy.
  5. Add the rinsed substrate to the aquarium.

Some temporary cloudiness after filling the aquarium is normal with fine mineral substrates. Filtration and settling will usually clear the water.

Setting Up a New Aquarium

For a new aquarium, add the rinsed aragonite before filling the tank.

Carefully add water to minimise disturbance of the sand, then start the filtration system and allow suspended particles to settle.

Before adding livestock, make sure the aquarium is properly cycled and that temperature, pH, ammonia and nitrite are suitable and stable.

Adding Aragonite to an Established Aquarium

Take additional care when adding aragonite to an aquarium that already contains fish.

Because aragonite can influence hardness, alkalinity and pH, adding a large quantity at once may change water chemistry more quickly than desired.

Rinse it thoroughly and consider introducing it gradually, particularly if the existing aquarium water is significantly softer or more acidic.

Test your water before and after making substantial substrate changes.

Aragonite vs Inert Aquarium Sand

The biggest difference is that aragonite is chemically active, while substrates such as quartz and silica sand are largely inert.

Choose aragonite when you specifically want a substrate that can contribute to harder, more alkaline conditions.

If you keep soft-water fish, shrimp or plants that prefer acidic conditions, an inert or specialised planted substrate may be a better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does aragonite raise aquarium pH?

Aragonite is primarily calcium carbonate and can help increase and buffer alkalinity and hardness, particularly in softer or more acidic water. The final pH will depend on the chemistry of the aquarium and source water.

Will this substrate automatically keep my aquarium at pH 8.2?

No exact pH can be guaranteed. The manufacturer associates oolitic aragonite with maintaining alkaline aquarium conditions around pH 8.2, but actual pH depends on source water, carbonate hardness, aquarium conditions and maintenance.

Is Aqua Natural Aragonite suitable for African cichlids?

Yes. It is particularly suitable for African cichlid aquariums where hard, alkaline water is required.

Is this sand suitable for Malawi cichlids?

Yes. The fine aragonite sand and its buffering properties make it well suited to many Lake Malawi cichlids when used as part of an appropriately maintained aquarium.

Can Aqua Natural Aragonite be used in marine aquariums?

Yes. Oolitic aragonite is also suitable for marine and reef aquarium applications.

Do I need to rinse the aragonite before use?

Yes. Rinse the substrate thoroughly with clean water before adding it to the aquarium. Do not use soap or cleaning chemicals.

Why is my aquarium cloudy after adding aragonite?

Fine mineral particles can temporarily cloud the water after the substrate is added. Thorough rinsing helps reduce this, and remaining particles normally settle or are removed by filtration.

Is aragonite suitable for every freshwater aquarium?

No. Because aragonite can increase hardness and alkalinity, it is best used where those conditions are desirable. It may not be appropriate for fish or plants that require soft, acidic water.
