Brilliantly Colored Honey Blue Eye Rainbowfish 3-4cm

Bring a true splash of tropical beauty to your freshwater aquarium with the vibrantly-hued Honey Blue Eye Rainbow (Pseudomugil mellis). Native to the tannin-stained waters of northeastern Australia, this peaceful rainbowfish is a must-have for fish enthusiasts.

Stunning Coloration As their name suggests, adult males of this species exhibit a breathtaking golden-honey body coloration overlaid with electric blue stripes. The eye-catching blue "mask" around their eyes is a defining characteristic. Females are more subdued in color but still quite attractive fish in their own right. Both sexes remain relatively small, topping out around 6-7 cm.

Active Community Fish Honey Blue Eyes do best when kept in schools of 6 or more. They are very active swimmers that will explore all areas of the aquarium with their shimmering colors on full display. Despite their beauty, they are very peaceful community fish that can be housed with other tranquil species of similar size. Their calm nature makes them an ideal resident of the peaceful community tank.

Water Requirements Like other rainbowfish, the Honey Blue Eye has specific water requirements for optimal health:

Temperature: 22-28°C pH: 6.0-7.5 (slightly acidic) Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2-12 dGH)

Diet & Feeding In their natural habitat, these omnivorous fish feed on small crustaceans, worms, and insects found in the water column and among plant matter. For the home aquarium, provide:

  • Quality flakes and micro pellets
  • Live/frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms
  • Blanched vegetables for added nutrients

Feed small amounts 2-3 times per day, only what they can consume in 3-5 minutes.

Breeding Honey Blue Eyes are egg-scatteringfish that exhibit no parental care. To breed, provide a mesh tray or dense planting for the fish to spawn over. After spawning, promptly separate the parents to avoid egg predation. The eggs will hatch in 7-14 days at 24-27°C.
