What Does Aquarium Filter Wool Do?

Aquarium filter wool is used for fine mechanical filtration. It physically traps small particles such as fish waste, uneaten food, plant debris and suspended sediment before they continue circulating through the aquarium.

For best results, fine filter wool is usually placed after a coarser sponge or other mechanical media. The coarse stage captures larger debris first, while the filter wool helps polish smaller particles from the water.

How to Use BioPro Filter Wool

Cut the pad to the size required for your filter and position it so water is directed through the material rather than around it.

Do not pack the filter wool too tightly, as excessive compression can restrict water flow or cause water to bypass the media.

When Should Filter Wool Be Cleaned or Replaced?

Check the filter wool regularly and clean or replace it when it becomes heavily soiled or when water flow begins to decline.

How often this is needed will depend on your aquarium stocking level, feeding, filter design and the amount of debris being produced.

Filter Wool vs Filter Floss

The terms filter wool and filter floss are commonly used for fine synthetic mechanical filter media. Both are designed to trap smaller suspended particles and help improve water clarity.

This BioPro pad is made from polyester and can be cut to fit many aquarium filtration systems.

Suitable for Freshwater and Marine Aquariums

BioPro filter wool can be used in freshwater and marine aquarium filtration systems that accept cut-to-size mechanical filter media.

It is suitable for use in canister filters, sumps, internal filter chambers and other compatible filtration systems where fine particle removal is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is aquarium filter wool used for?

Aquarium filter wool is used as fine mechanical filter media to trap small suspended particles and debris from aquarium water.

Is filter wool the same as filter floss?

The terms are commonly used interchangeably for fine synthetic mechanical filter media. Both are designed to catch smaller particles and help improve water clarity.

Can this filter wool pad be cut to size?

Yes. The 50cm x 50cm x 1.5cm pad can be cut to fit suitable filter trays, chambers and compartments.

Where should filter wool go in an aquarium filter?

Fine filter wool is generally most effective after coarser mechanical media, although the correct position depends on the direction of water flow through your particular filter.

Does aquarium filter wool remove ammonia?

No. Filter wool provides mechanical filtration by trapping physical debris. Biological filter media is responsible for the microbial processing of ammonia and nitrite.
